Does the COL % I set in Budgets show on my schedule?

How the budget Cost of Labour % appears on your rota, which target the schedule uses, and why it can differ from your Projected COL %.

Written by Sasha Lucinschi

Who this is for: anyone who sets budgets in Nory and builds rotas. By default only admins can create or edit budgets, and GMs can view budgets for the locations they are assigned to.

Short answer

Yes. The Cost of Labour (COL) % you set on the Budgets page appears on your schedule as the target your rota is measured against.

It does not change any costs. Your wage rates, projected labour spend and sales forecast all stay exactly as they are. The budget COL % is the line your rota is compared to, not a number that feeds into it.

What you need in place

For the Budget figure to appear on your schedule:

  • A budget set for that location and period. A day only counts if it has both a sales budget and a COL %.

  • Permission to view budgets. Without it you will not see budget figures on the schedule, even where colleagues at your brand can.

If you have both and still cannot see a Budget figure, contact your Nory CSM, as it may not be switched on for your brand yet.

Where the budget COL % shows up

Open your schedule for the week and look at the bar above the rota. You will see two figures side by side:

  • Projected, which is what your current rota costs. It shows the COL %, the spend and the total hours.

  • Budget, which is your target from the Budgets page. It shows the COL % and the budgeted spend.

Your Projected figure turns red when it goes over the Budget target, so you can see at a glance whether the rota you have built is affordable.

Your daily budget % also shows in the daily schedule view, so you can check a single day rather than the week as a whole.

The budget COL % is used again by the cost colour in the approval drawer when you approve a rota.

If some days that week have no budget set, the Budget figure covers only the days that do. The COL % is weighted by those days alone, so a partly budgeted week still gives you an accurate target for the part you have budgeted.

Which target wins

If a location has both a budget COL % and a weekly labour target set, the schedule uses the budget COL %. The weekly labour target is only used when the budget COL % is not available to you.

Where it does not show up

The budget COL % is not used anywhere else in Nory. It does not appear in:

  • Labour Insights

  • Flash P&L

  • Alerts and emails

  • Schedule approval blocking, so it will not stop you approving an over-budget rota

  • All Schedules

  • Auto-scheduling and Fill open shifts, which both work from the sales forecast

On the Budgets page itself, the COL % drives your budget versus actual COL view.

If your schedule shows a different target

If your schedule cannot use your budget COL %, it falls back to the location's weekly labour target. That is a separate setting, and a separate number.

To find it:

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Open Location Attributes

  3. Select Scheduling

  4. Open Labour Targets

The weekly labour target is one % for the whole week. Your budget COL % can change from period to period. If a target on your rota looks wrong, check which of the two it is before anything else.

Why the two percentages do not match

The Projected COL % and your budget COL % are worked out against different sales figures:

Figure

Labour cost used

Sales used

Projected COL % on the rota

Planned labour cost

Actual sales for days already traded, plus forecast sales for today and the rest of the week

Budget COL %

Budget labour cost

Budget sales

So the two are not like for like. If your sales are running below your budget sales, your Projected COL % looks higher even when your planned labour spend is bang on budget.
