Upload budgets for multiple locations at once

Update sales, COGS and labour budgets across all your locations with one spreadsheet, instead of editing each location by hand.

Written by Sasha Lucinschi

Who this is for

This applies to Budgets in Nory. You need the Can edit budgets permission. By default only admins can create or edit budgets, and GMs (General Managers) can view budgets for the locations they are assigned to. If the Bulk upload button is missing, ask an admin to check your Permissions tab.

What bulk upload does

Bulk upload lets you set budgets for several locations in one go by filling in a spreadsheet and uploading it. It replaces editing each location's budget one at a time in the Budgets tab.

Bulk upload is for budgets, which are your sales, COGS and labour targets. It is not the same as your sales forecast, which is Nory's prediction of what you will sell and is edited inside the schedule. Changing a budget does not change your forecast, and editing your forecast does not change your budget.

What you need before you start

  • The Can edit budgets permission

  • Excel, or another spreadsheet tool that can save .xlsx files

  • The Nory template, downloaded from the Bulk upload modal

Nory only accepts its own Excel template. CSV files and your own spreadsheet layouts are not supported.

How to upload budgets in bulk

  1. Go to the Budgets tab in the top navigation bar.

  2. Click Bulk upload.

  3. In the modal, choose the granularity you want (daily, weekly or monthly) and the period to cover, then click Download template. The template contains one row per location per period, and it follows whatever filters you have applied to the Budgets table. Filter to certain locations first and only those locations appear in the template.

  4. Fill in the budget columns in the template. Do not rename, reorder or delete the columns, and do not change the values in branch_name or branch_bson_id. You can delete any rows you do not need, but every row you keep needs a value in each budget column.

  5. Save the file as .xlsx.

  6. Back in the same modal, upload your filled-in file.

If everything is valid, Nory updates all the budgets in the file, overwriting any budget already set for those periods. If anything is wrong, nothing is uploaded and Nory tells you which cells to fix. Correct those cells in your spreadsheet and upload the same file again.

What each column means

Column

What goes in it

branch_name

The location's name, filled in by Nory. Leave it as it is.

branch_bson_id

Nory's internal ID for that location, filled in by Nory. Leave it as it is, as this is what Nory uses to match the row to the right location.

period_start

First day the budget covers, written as YYYY-MM-DD. It needs to match the granularity you chose in the modal.

period_end

Last day the budget covers, written as YYYY-MM-DD.

sales_budget

Your sales target for that period, as a number with no currency symbol.

cogs_pct

Your Cost of Goods Sold target, as a decimal of the sales budget.

col_pct

Your Cost of Labour target, as a decimal of the sales budget.

Percentages must be written as decimals

The cogs_pct and col_pct columns take decimals, not whole numbers. This matches how percentages work in Excel.

  • 5% is 0.05

  • 20% is 0.2

  • 32.5% is 0.325

Nory rejects any value of 1 or more, so entering 20 instead of 0.2 fails validation rather than setting a 2000% target. Check both columns before you upload.

If the upload fails

Nory tells you which cells need fixing rather than part-uploading the file. Fix the flagged cells in your spreadsheet, save it, and upload the same file again. Common causes are:

  • Percentages entered as whole numbers rather than decimals, or any percentage of 1 or more

  • Dates in a format other than YYYY-MM-DD

  • A renamed, reordered or deleted column

  • A branch_bson_id that has been edited or cleared, or a budget cell left blank

  • The file saved as CSV rather than .xlsx

Still not working?

Message us from the Nory app with:

  • The spreadsheet you tried to upload

  • The error message Nory showed you, or a screenshot of it

  • The name of one location and the period you were trying to update
