Why does Nory say an email is already in use when I add an employee?

Why an email can only be used once in Nory, and how to fix it: use a different email, ask the other employer to offboard them, or contact Support.

Who this is for: managers adding or inviting employees in Nory.

What the message means

Each email address can only be linked to one Nory account. If Nory says an email is already in use, that address already has an account. This is usually because the employee works, or used to work, for another business that also uses Nory.

For privacy reasons, you can't see which account an email belongs to.

Quickest fix: use a different email address

Add the employee with another email address, such as a personal one, or ask them to create a new one. This works straight away and you don't need to contact Support.

If they still work for the other business, or haven't been offboarded there yet

Their account with the other business is still active, so the email can't be used for a new account. You have two options:

  • Use a different email address for your business. If they work for both businesses, this is the only option, and they'll have a separate Nory login for each employer.

  • Ask the employee to request that their previous employer offboards them in Nory. Once they've been offboarded, the email is freed up and you can add them with it.

If they left the other business a long time ago

Sometimes an old account still holds the email even though the employee was offboarded a while ago. In this case, contact Support and we'll free up the email for you. Please send us:

  • the employee's full name

  • the email address showing as already in use

  • the location you're adding them to

  • the name of their previous employer, if you know it

Invite email didn't arrive?

Ask the employee to check their spam or junk folder. If it still isn't there, contact Support with their name and email address and we'll resend the invite.
