Why do sales in my POS not match sales in Nory?
Small differences between sales figures in your Point of Sale (POS) system and Nory are common. This does not usually mean that one system is incorrect.
In most cases, the difference comes from how each system records and groups sales data.
Your POS focuses on accounting, meaning when payment is taken. Nory focuses on operations, meaning when food is prepared and costs occur.
Below are the most common reasons why figures may differ.
1. Nory’s 4:00 AM Business Day
Nory business days run from 4:00 AM to 4:00 AM in your local time, not midnight to midnight.
Why this matters:
Many venues trade after midnight. Using a 4:00 AM cut-off keeps late-night service within the same operational day. If your POS uses a different cut-off time, such as midnight or 5:00 AM, daily sales totals will not match exactly.
2. Order Creation Time vs Payment Time
Nory records sales based on the order creation time. Your POS may record sales based on the payment or closing time.
Why this matters:
Order creation time reflects when staff are working and ingredients are used. This makes it more accurate for labour and stock reporting, even if payment is taken later.
3. Gift Cards and Deposits
Not all payments count as revenue at the time they are taken.
Nory records revenue from:
Gift cards
Deposits
when they are redeemed, not when the money is first paid.
Why this matters:
When a customer buys a £50 gift card, no food has been sold yet. Revenue is only recognised when the gift card is used. This keeps Gross Profit (GP) accurate by matching revenue with the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) at the time of service.
4. Unclosed Orders and Transitory Sales
Orders left open after the business day cut-off can cause timing differences.
Some POS systems:
Automatically close open orders at the end of the day, or carry the order into the next business day. Depending on how your POS behaves, a sale may appear in Nory on one day and in the POS on the following day.
5. Service Charges and Tips
POS systems handle service charges and tips differently. Some POS reports include them in total sales.
Nory usually separates them from net sales. If you see a difference, check whether your POS total includes service charges or tips that Nory is excluding.
6. Data Freshness and Reports
If you are comparing live figures, use the Sales Insights tab in Nory.
Sales Insights is the most up-to-date view, usually within 15 minutes. Inventory and financial reports may lag slightly due to processing. Refreshing the report or checking Sales Insights should help align figures.
